The Society holds elections for its organisational committee each term after the Termly General Meeting in 8th week. Any member of the society can stand for Committee; all we ask is that you are enthusiastic and dedicated to the committee. Lawsoc Committee is a fantastic opportunity to make friends, organise events and learn more about the legal profession. Whether your interest lies in helping at our legendary social events, planning prestigious mooting competitions or editing Verdict magazine, Lawsoc has something for you - and you're guaranteed to enjoy yourself doing it! No other society combines intense responsibility with such excellent access to graduate recruiters and partners at the worlds best law firms, as well as so many high-profile icons from the legal world.
Get yourself on committee!
Committee members are expected to work hard and attend ALL events, but the benefits are worth it. If you think that you're up to the challenge, then nominate yourself for election. Nominations open on Wednesday of 6th week each term, and close on Wednesday of 7th week. To nominate yourself for committee, you need to write to the Returning Officer or Deputy Returning Officer during the nomination period. Check your mailing list e-mails for updates and information specific to each term. You'll have to write a short (50 word) manifesto to explain why you think you should be elected, and you're expected to turn up to the TGM to give a short (about 2 minute) hust. If you have exams and can't make the hust then don't worry - you can still run if you're unable to make the TGM and have submitted an apology.
If you've decided to run, make sure you follow the nomination procedure carefully and have a good read of our constitution. The elections are completely fair - no independent publicity is allowed at all. The best thing you can do is write a good manifesto and have lots to say when you're husting. We'll be looking for evidence of your dedication to the society in all its areas (not just socials!). If you're unsure about running, come along to our presentations and find a current committee member to talk to.
Executive committee elections
At the TGM, there are elections for the President, Vice President, Treasurer and Secretary positions. To run for these positions, candidates must already be on the committee. All members are invited to the TGM to see these candidates hust and to take part in deciding these important roles.
