Welcome, everyone, to Michaelmas Term 2011! I am incredibly excited about the upcoming term, and believe that our blend of informative, career-focused events and stunning social evenings will make Michaelmas 2011 our biggest and best term to date! Our goal is to ensure that the interests of all our members are satisfied this term; so whether you’re aspiring to a career at the Bar, looking to learn about life as a city solicitor, or simply want to indulge in champagne and tapas, LawSoc has an event which will appeal to you!
Our social calendar for Michaelmas is brimming to the full with mouth-watering events, as we bring together traditional LawSoc greats alongside new and improved creations. We kick-off with the quintessential curtain raiser of any Oxford term - President’s Drinks. After over a year away, ‘Prezzies’ makes its majestic return to the Town Hall, one of Oxford’s most impressive venues. Join us for an evening filled with music and unlimited drinks as we begin Michaelmas in true style! We are bringing back several events which have proved extremely popular over the past year, such as Tapas & Sangria, in which members can enjoy a variety of Spanish delights, and Cocktails & Cupcakes at House Bar, where guests can enjoy a range of sumptuous food and drink. After a long day at lectures, what could be a better way to relax than joining us at ‘Ice Cream Indulgence’ in 3rd week, where members can enjoy coffees, cakes and of course lots of ice cream! And of course, LawSoc has ensured that 2011 will go out with a bang, with 7th week not only bringing you the termly instalment of ‘Champagne & Chocolates,’ but also the Law Society Ball. Whilst our venue must remain shrouded in secrecy for a little longer, one thing is for certain - this is shaping up to be a truly unforgettable night!
We are also offering a huge variety of career-based presentations this term. In 2nd week, Blackstone Chambers will be providing a first-hand insight into ‘Life at the Bar,’ an excellent opportunity for any students considering this particular career-path. Our presentations will also aim to illuminate areas of the legal industry that traditionally experience little coverage. For example, Freshfields will be mapping out the various opportunities that are available to non-law undergraduates within commercial law, whilst Kirkland & Ellis will be ‘demystifying’ the American law firm. Our events will also have a practical edge; with Eversheds, build vital commercial awareness by discussing a ‘Hot Topic’ from today’s legal world, or join Herbert Smith for an interactive session focusing on the skill of alternative dispute resolution (ADR).
Our termcard is completed by an array of other great opportunities, such as mooting competitions and our two dinner events, which provide the perfect opportunity to network with current lawyers in a comfortable and relaxed atmosphere. Our Speaker Series gives you the chance to become inspired this Michaelmas, with Lord Ken Macdonald and Daniela Weber-Rey providing a fascinating insight into their respective careers at the Bar and within the ‘Magic Circle.’ Lastly, as in past terms, members will be able to buy cut-price, LawSoc branded clothing thanks to the generosity of our sponsors - please visit www.oxfordlawsoc.com/stash for more information.
The committee has worked extremely hard throughout the summer to help organise this term’s events, so I hope that Michaelmas 2011 will exceed all expectations! I look forward to meeting everyone at President’s Drinks this coming Friday - catch you on the dance floor!
Yours,
Josh Gorman
