The Oxford Law Society is one of the largest student societies in Oxford. It is run by students for students, in association with the Careers service and the Faculty of Law. Law Soc's main aims are to provide regular speaker events and opportunities to speak with representatives from barristers' Chambers and law firms through either presentations or social events.
Oxford Law Soc is open to all members of Oxford University, the Oxford Institute of Legal Practice and and other establishment specified in the Proctors' memorandum. Members do not have to be reading law: the society is open to those of any discipline with an interest in the law, whether academically or as a career aspiration.
Mooting is an essential activity for aspiring barristers, very useful for any lawyer and a great deal of fun. The society holds 'Introduction to Mooting' events each term, where members can receive a copy of our mooting handbook as well as information to help them start mooting. There are often other events to help with members mooting skills. The prestigious Crown Office mooting competition is held termly by the society.
A lot of our members intend to practice after they graduate. The society provides a great deal of career information through its website and events. The termly series of Presentations provide insightful discussions on topical or essential career-related issues. These often include 'Law for Non-Lawyers', 'Commercial Awareness' and 'Life at the Bar' presentations.
The Society's termly magazine has become a well-respected publication. It contains society news, topical articles by icons from the legal world as well as the winning essays from the termly essay competition. The publication is delivered to members in 8th week of each term.
Law Soc has an enviable reputation for holding some of the most popular and successful social events in Oxford. Sponsored social events are designed to enable our members to meet with Solicitors and Barristers on a more informal setting. The usual series of social events will include President's Drinks (sponsored by Herbert Smith), Champagne & Chocolates (Burges Salmon), Wine Tasting (Baker & McKenzie), Clubnight, Cocktail Night, Spanish Night (Michaelmas) and Summer Garden Party (Trinity). The society also holds extremely popular termly balls at well-known venues, such as The Dorchester Hotel, The V&A Museum, the Law Society of England and Wales, the Roman Baths and Warwick Castle.
All events are open to members of the society. Membership can be obtained by contacting the current membership secretary or via the form on this website (click 'Membership' on the left).
